Australia’s hopes in the T20 World Cup 2024 were dashed after Afghanistan secured a historic 8-run victory against Bangladesh at St. Vincent, clinching their first-ever semi-final berth in the tournament. Australia, facing elimination after a loss to India and with just 2 points from 3 games, relied on Afghanistan’s result against Bangladesh to stay in contention.
Australia Knocked Out of T20 World Cup 2024
India had earlier defeated Australia by 24 runs, putting immense pressure on Afghanistan to win against Bangladesh to secure their semi-final spot. Led by Rashid Khan, Afghanistan did just that, overcoming Bangladesh in a tense encounter.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Afghanistan faced initial struggles despite a promising start from openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who contributed 54 runs in the first 9 overs. Bangladesh fought back, particularly through Rishad Hossain’s 3-wicket haul that restricted Afghanistan to 93 for 5 after a strong start.
A crucial late surge led by Rashid Khan, who smashed 19 runs off 10 balls including 3 sixes, propelled Afghanistan to a competitive total. In response, Bangladesh’s Litton Das launched a spirited counter-attack, raising hopes of a dramatic comeback and a semi-final berth. However, Rashid Khan’s pivotal 4-wicket haul dismantled Bangladesh’s batting lineup, leaving them short despite Litton Das’s resilient effort.
Naveen-ul-Haq’s decisive spells ensured Afghanistan sealed the victory, ending Bangladesh’s aspirations and confirming Australia’s exit from the tournament. The result marks a historic milestone for Afghanistan in T20 cricket, underlining their rising stature on the international stage.
As Afghanistan prepares to face new challenges in the semi-finals, their journey in the T20 World Cup 2024 continues to captivate fans worldwide, showcasing the team’s determination and talent amidst stiff competition.
