BCCI Announces India’s Squad for T20I Series Against Sri Lanka

The BCCI announced on Thursday (July 18) the India squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. This will be India’s second T20I assignment since becoming the world champions last month.

Soon after the T20 World Cup ended, a less experienced Indian team played a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Shubman Gill led the team to an impressive 4-1 series victory.

Following Rohit Sharma’s announcement of retirement from T20Is after leading India to a World Cup victory, the BCCI has confirmed the new T20I captain. Along with Virat Kohli, Rohit and Ravindra Jadeja have also retired from T20Is.

While it was widely expected that Hardik Pandya would be named captain of the T20I side, the selectors and team management have decided to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as the new captain. Shubman Gill has been appointed as the vice-captain, taking over from Pandya, who was the vice-captain during the T20 World Cup last month. Gill has also been named as the vice-captain for the ODI team.

From the squad that played against Zimbabwe earlier this month, Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, and Khaleel Ahmed have retained their spots in the T20I team. Abhishek Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad have not cut this series.

Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj will be in action for the first time since India’s T20 World Cup win.

The three T20Is will be played in Pallekele, with the series scheduled to begin on July 27. The second and third games will be played on July 28 and 30, respectively. This will be followed by a three-match ODI series.

This series will mark a new journey for Team India in the shortest format of the game, with a new head coach and captain at the helm. The Men in Blue will be aiming to start this journey on a winning note.
