In his first series as Team India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir led the team to a commanding 3-0 whitewash over Sri Lanka in the recently concluded T20I series. The thrilling finale at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, July 30, saw India clinch victory in a Super Over after a tied third T20I, sealing the series triumph.
Addressing the team in the dressing room post-victory, Gambhir lauded Suryakumar Yadav for his outstanding captaincy and batting prowess. “Guys, congratulations on a great series win. Congratulations to Surya as well, outstanding captaincy, and more importantly with the bat as well,” Gambhir commended, highlighting Yadav’s pivotal role in the series.
Despite the challenging circumstances of defending a modest total of 138 runs, Gambhir praised the team’s resilience and fight until the end. The former cricketer, now coach, emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, especially on spin-friendly pitches. He noted, “We keep getting, we keep improving our skills as well because we need to still get better on playing on wickets like these because we might end up getting this kind of wickets.”
Gambhir’s address, shared by the BCCI on social media, reflected a balanced approach to celebrating the series win while also focusing on areas of growth. He urged the team to quickly assess situations and understand what a par score might be on challenging pitches, underlining the importance of learning from each game.
As India moves forward under Gambhir’s guidance, the series victory sets a positive tone for future challenges and showcases the team’s potential under new leadership.
