Team India’s vice-captain, Hardik Pandya, is taking some much-needed time off to rejuvenate after an intense few months in the IPL 2024. This season marked a significant change for Pandya as he made his captaincy debut for the Mumbai Indians (MI), following his successful tenure with the Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2022 and 2023. Under his leadership, the Titans clinched the IPL trophy in 2022 and were the runners-up in 2023.
In a surprising move, Mumbai Indians pulled off an all-money trade with Gujarat Titans to bring Pandya back into their fold. This decision led to his appointment as captain, replacing the long-standing captain, Rohit Sharma. The move sparked a massive backlash from MI fans, who expressed their displeasure by booing Pandya throughout the season.
The pressure from fans and the weight of expectations took a toll on Pandya’s performance. He managed to score only 216 runs across 14 games, averaging 18. His bowling also suffered, with 11 wickets at a high economy rate of 10.75. The overall performance of the Mumbai Indians was dismal, as they ended up at the bottom of the points table, further compounding Pandya’s challenges as captain.
After enduring a challenging season, Pandya is now on a break to recharge before returning to action at the T20 World Cup next month. He recently shared glimpses of his downtime on Instagram, posting videos and a picture with the caption: “Recharging.”
This period of rest is crucial for Pandya as he prepares to represent India on the international stage, hoping to leave behind the disappointments of the IPL and perform at his best in the upcoming tournament.
