In a thrilling encounter at Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Titans stamped their authority over the Chennai Super Kings, clinching a resounding victory by 35 runs in their IPL 2024 fixture. The match, held on Friday, witnessed an exceptional performance from Gujarat’s opening pair, Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan, who orchestrated a record-equalling double-century stand.
Gill showcased his batting prowess by smashing a scintillating 104 runs off just 55 balls, marking the season’s first century. His innings, embellished with six towering sixes, set the stage on fire. Sudharsan complemented Gill’s brilliance with a blistering 103 off 51 deliveries, laced with five boundaries and seven maximums.
The duo’s phenomenal partnership of 210 runs for the opening wicket not only laid a formidable foundation but also equaled the previous record set by Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul back in 2022.
Despite a valiant effort from Chennai’s Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali, who stitched together a crucial 109-run partnership for the fourth wicket, the target proved insurmountable. Mitchell’s quickfire 63 off 34 balls and Ali’s composed 56 off 36 deliveries injected hope into Chennai’s chase, but Gujarat’s bowlers held their nerve.
Gujarat’s bowling spearhead, Mohit Sharma, starred with figures of 3/31, dismantling Chennai’s batting order with precision. Rashid Khan provided crucial support with two dismissals, ensuring Gujarat’s dominance throughout the match.
Even a late surge from CSK’s skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who smashed a 26-run cameo off just 11 balls, couldn’t alter the course of the game as CSK concluded their innings at 196/8 in 20 overs.
With this emphatic victory, Gujarat Titans remain in contention for a playoff spot, keeping their aspirations alive in the IPL 2024 season.
