Delhi Capitals’ campaign in the IPL 2024 has hit a roadblock as their captain, Rishabh Pant, faces suspension for one match due to repeated slow over-rate offences. The setback comes just ahead of a crucial match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where Pant will be sorely missed.
Pant’s suspension stems from the team’s slow over-rates in their recent encounters, including their 20-run victory against Rajasthan Royals on May 7. The IPL disciplinary committee fined Pant Rs 30 lakh for the breach of the Code of Conduct.
The IPL issued an official statement announcing the suspension of Mr. Rishabh Pant, the Captain of Delhi Capitals, for one match and a fine. This action was taken due to the team’s slow over-rate during their match against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on May 7, 2024, breaching the IPL Code of Conduct.
This isn’t the first instance of Delhi Capitals being penalized for slow over-rates this season. Earlier incidents occurred during matches against Chennai Super Kings on March 31 and Kolkata Knight Riders on April 3. As it was the team’s third offence of the season, Pant faced a hefty fine and suspension.
Furthermore, all other DC players in the Playing XI received penalties, either a fine of INR 12 lakh or 50% of their match fees, whichever is lesser.
Despite DC’s appeal challenging the match referee’s ruling, the decision was upheld by the BCCI Ombudsman after a virtual hearing. This ruling has dealt a blow to Delhi Capitals’ playoff aspirations in the IPL 2024, emphasizing the importance of maintaining discipline on the field to avoid such setbacks in future matches.
