In a battle of attrition at the IPL, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) showcased a remarkable bowling performance to secure a 24-run victory against the five-time champion Mumbai Indians. The match, which unfolded on Friday, saw KKR’s bowlers working in unison to stifle Mumbai’s batting lineup on a challenging wicket.
Despite KKR’s batters faltering and being bowled out for 169, with Venkatesh Iyer being the top scorer with 70 runs, Mumbai Indians couldn’t capitalize on the modest target. Mumbai’s underperforming batters struggled on the tricky pitch, eventually getting bundled out for 145 runs in 18.5 overs.
The win marked KKR’s first away victory in Mumbai in 12 years, a significant achievement for the team. Interestingly, the last time KKR triumphed in Mumbai, their principal owner Shah Rukh Khan was embroiled in controversy, leading to a ban from the venue for three years. Coincidentally, that year KKR went on to win the IPL trophy.
KKR’s victory propelled them to 14 points in the tournament, keeping them in contention for a top-two finish. Mitchell Starc played a pivotal role for KKR, claiming four wickets and cleaning up Mumbai’s tail, while Suryakumar Yadav’s valiant fifty wasn’t enough to rescue Mumbai Indians.
The spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine also played crucial roles, restricting Mumbai’s batters with identical figures of 2 wickets for 22 runs each. Despite a promising knock from Suryakumar, none of Mumbai’s batters could provide substantial support, allowing KKR to dominate towards the end of the game.
KKR’s bowling unit showcased its depth and resilience, effectively countering Mumbai’s batting lineup and securing a crucial victory in the IPL. The win not only boosts KKR’s confidence but also strengthens their position in the tournament standings.
