Australia’s Test and ODI captain, Pat Cummins, played a supportive role as a substitute during the opening match of the 2024 T20 World Cup against Oman on Wednesday. The 2021 World Champions kicked off their campaign with a 39-run victory at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
Australia batted first after losing the toss, posting a total of 164/5 in 20 overs. All-rounder Marcus Stoinis led the charge with a stellar knock of 67 off 36 balls. Veteran opener David Warner provided stability with a responsible innings of 56 off 51 balls on a sluggish track.
Stoinis further contributed with the ball, taking three wickets to help Australia secure a comfortable win. Oman struggled in their chase, managing only 125/9 in their 20 overs, marking their second successive loss in the tournament.
Despite his usual role as a key player, Cummins was not included in Australia’s playing XI for this match, with the management opting for Nathan Ellis instead. Ellis justified his selection with an economical spell of 4-0-28-2. Cummins, ever the team player, was seen carrying drinks for his teammates throughout the match, embodying the spirit of teamwork and support.
Australia’s victory set a positive tone for their World Cup campaign, demonstrating depth in both batting and bowling, with players like Cummins ready to contribute in any capacity.
