In a stunning display of power-hitting, West Indies skipper Rovman Powell showcased his prowess with a massive 107-meter six during the T20 World Cup clash against Uganda in Guyana on June 8. Powell, known for his long levers and explosive batting, made his mark on the game with this extraordinary shot.
At the 10-over mark of the West Indian inning, Powell had just arrived at the crease and was on four runs from two deliveries. Sensing the need to accelerate the run rate, Powell wasted no time and dispatched the first ball of the 11th over for a boundary off the bowling of off-spinner Frank Nsubuga. However, it was his next move that left spectators in awe.
On the fourth ball of the over, Powell confidently stepped down the track and launched a colossal maximum over the long-on region. The ball sailed over the roof and out of the stadium, registering a staggering distance of 107 meters, the longest six of the tournament thus far.
Despite his breathtaking display, Powell’s innings was short-lived as he was dismissed soon after for a quickfire 23 off 18 deliveries, leaving the West Indies at 125/4 in the 16th over. However, fellow power-hitter Andre Russell took charge, scoring a blistering 30 runs off just 17 balls to propel the side to a competitive total of 173/5 in 20 overs.
In response, the Uganda batters struggled against the sensational left-arm spin-bowling of Akeal Hosein. Hosein wreaked havoc, finishing with remarkable figures of 5/11 in 4 overs as the West Indies bowled Uganda out for a mere 39 runs, securing a resounding 134-run victory.
Powell’s monumental six set the tone for the West Indies’ dominance in the match, showcasing their firepower with both bat and ball. With performances like these, the West Indies team remains a force to be reckoned with in the T20 World Cup.
