In a significant announcement, South African opener Dean Elgar has revealed his decision to retire from international cricket following the Test series against India. The former Test captain, who has had a distinguished career spanning 12 years, will bid farewell after two crucial Test matches.
The first of the two Tests will take place at Dean Elgar’s home ground at SuperSport Park in Centurion, scheduled between December 26 and 30. The final Test of his international career will be at the iconic Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town, set to be held from January 3 to 7.
“Dean Elgar, 36, has been a stalwart for South Africa, representing the nation in 84 Tests and eight One-Day Internationals. Since making his debut in 2012 against Australia, the left-handed batsman has amassed over 5000 runs in Tests at an impressive average of 37.28”.
Expressing his sentiments about retiring from the game, Dean Elgar said, “Playing the game of cricket has always been a dream of mine, but having the opportunity to represent your country is the ultimate! Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams. It has been an incredible journey that I have been fortunate enough to have.”
“Acknowledging that all good things come to an end, Dean Elgar stated that the Indian home series will mark his final appearance on the international stage. The Cape Town Test holds special significance for him, being his favorite stadium where he scored his first Test run against New Zealand and will now conclude his illustrious career”.
