The group stage of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup concluded with an emphatic victory for Sri Lanka Women over Thailand Women at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Wednesday, July 24. Sri Lanka secured a comprehensive 10-wicket win in the Group B match, displaying their dominance and securing a spot in the semifinals.
Batting first after winning the toss, Thailand Women struggled to build momentum and were restricted to 93-7 in their 20 overs. Nannapat Koncharoenkai was the standout performer for Thailand, scoring an unbeaten 47 off 53 balls, but she received little support from her teammates. Sri Lanka’s bowlers were on point, with Kavisha Dilhari leading the attack by claiming 2-13 in her four overs, while four other bowlers chipped in with a wicket each.
Sri Lanka chased down the target with ease, reaching 94 without loss in just 11.3 overs. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu led from the front with a blistering 49* off 35 balls, while Vishmi Gunaratne provided excellent support with an unbeaten 39 off 34 balls.
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh registered a massive 114-run win over Malaysia in another Group B match. Batting first, Bangladesh posted an imposing 191-2, courtesy of a superb 80 off 59 balls by Murshida Khatun and an unbeaten 62 off 37 balls by Nigar Sultana. Nahida Akter then spearheaded the bowling attack, taking 2-13 as Malaysia were limited to 77-8 in their 20 overs.
With the group stage now complete, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh have advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024. The semifinal line-up is set as follows:
- July 26: IND vs BAN, 1st semifinal, Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium (2:00 PM IST)
- July 26: SL vs PAK, 2nd semifinal, Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium (7:00 PM IST)
- July 28: Final, Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium (7:00 PM IST)
